Summary

The emigration of Faial as result of Capelinhos, vulcanic eruption was an exceptional one. Indeed, during the XX century the Azoreans did not go out to live abroad since the earlier thirties, which had resulted in a population increase and had consequences too in the age structure and in the levels of mortality and fertility. This dynamic had contributed to a greater diversity in the demographic variables in the different islands of the archipelago. That emigration had yet a great influence in the distribution of the population inside the island, with a decline of the rural population, namely those who were victims of that natural catastrophe.
